Artisan Group
Hope Designs is made up of several different families and co-ops in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand who craft gorgeous and intricate jewelry. Primarily using waxed cotton and brass beads, the artisans deftly weave amazing necklaces, bracelets and anklets. The artisans in the co-ops are from different hill tribes: Karen, Lawa, Hmong and Akha. Unfortunately, hill tribe people face a lot of discrimination within Thailand. Not only do the artisans earn a fair and reliable living through their sales to Hope Designs but they also are able to work from home, allowing them to take care of their children.
Meet the Artisans:
Arsuu and his wife Nueng are both members of the Akha hill tribe. They established their jewelry co-op two years ago. Hope Design’s consistent orders employ their entire extended family and ensure that all the children in the family attend school.
Darin is one of hope’s main jewelry designers and manages three jewelry co-ops in the outlying areas of Chiang Mai. The revenue from her designs have given her the opportunity to study English, thus the ability to organize and expand sales for the artisans in the village co-ops that she works with.
Since she has been working with hope Fair Trade, Adun plans to visit her sick father in Burma with her paid vacation time. One year ago this was only a dream.
